The death toll rises to 25,000 after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

The number of deaths caused by the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria this Monday rises to 25,000, of which almost 22,000 were counted only in Turkish territory, the EFE agency reported.

With this new count, the number of wounded rose to 85,380 in both countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the death toll in Turkey has risen to 21,848, while the number of injured stands at 80,104.

Little has changed in the count in Syria compared to the figures presented the day before, both by the government of President Bashar al-Assad and by the White Helmets rescue group, which operates in areas opposed to the regime in northwestern Syria. the country.

The death toll in Syria is 3,553, of which 2,166 were in rebel areas.

In Turkey, despite the fact that rescue teams continue to work, in the last 24 hours only 67 people have been found alive, including a two-month-old baby, while the number of bodies recovered from under the rubble grows.

More than 13 million people lived in the affected area on Turkish soil in ten provinces and it is feared that thousands of victims are still under the rubble.

Among the survivors, the situation is very complicated. One million people were displaced -according to official data- in a large area of southeastern Turkish territory, larger than a country like Portugal.

On the other hand, in Syria, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than five million people were affected nationwide by the earthquakes, while more than 300,000 were “homeless” in just two of earthquake-affected provinces. .

In the opposition areas of northwestern Syria, the White Helmets today declared an end to search operations for survivors, after finding no signs of life under the rubble since Thursday.

A United Nations humanitarian aid convoy arrived in these areas today through a border crossing with Turkey, the third shipment sent since Monday’s earthquake and the first with specific supplies for those affected by the earthquake.

The first UN humanitarian aid convoy arrived in northwestern Syria last Thursday, almost four days after earthquakes devastated the region.

Syria and Turkey suffered an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale early Monday morning, which was followed by several aftershocks, one of them measuring 7.5.
