At least 48 people arrested for looting in Turkey

At least 48 people have been detained for looting in eight provinces affected by the earthquake that hit Turkey on Monday, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported today.

The suspects were detained as part of an investigation into thefts that occurred after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 25,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

A further 12 people associated with the construction industry were also arrested in Turkey following the collapse of thousands of buildings, including a businessman from Gaziantep province.

The brutal collapse of the buildings, revealing their poor construction and reducing the chances of their residents surviving, sparked an uprising in the country, killing about 22,000 people and injuring more than 80,000.

Syria and Turkey were hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in the early hours of Monday, followed by several aftershocks, one of which measured 7.5.
