Spanish court gives reason to man who says he has the right to walk naked in the street

A Spanish court has ruled in favor of Alejandro Colomar, a young man fined several times for walking naked through the streets of Aldaia, a city in the Valencia region, Reuters confirms.

In a statement, the region’s Supreme Court said it had annulled the fines imposed on the 29-year-old man because it recognized a “legal void” in Spain’s law regarding public nudity.

Alejandro Colomar was filmed arriving at the Superior Court of Justice in Valencia wearing only walking boots, but was asked to get dressed before entering the building. At his trial, he claimed the fines violated his right to liberty.

Speaking to Reuters, the man says he began stripping publicly in mid-2020 and received more support than insults when he walked around naked, though he was once threatened with a knife.

“The fine is pointless,” he said. “They accused me of obscene exhibitionism. According to the dictionary that implies sexual intent, that has nothing to do with what I was doing.”

Public nudity has been legal in Spain since 1988. Anyone can walk naked in the street without being arrested, but some regions, such as Valladolid and Barcelona, have introduced their own laws to regulate nudism, especially in areas far from the beach. The court noted that Aldaia has no law prohibiting nudism.

The Valencia Court therefore ruled that Alejando Colomar’s behavior did not constitute a “change in the security, peace of mind or public order of the citizens”.
