Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday acknowledged an “extremely difficult” situation in the resistance against Russian forces, which have been gaining ground in recent weeks, mainly near Bakhmut, in the east of the country.
“The situation on the frontline, especially in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, remains extremely difficult. It is literally a battle for every meter of Ukrainian land.”said Zelensky in his daily evening video address.
According to the Ukrainian president, everyone should understand the meaning of these battles: “Every meter gained is a defense for our entire country. Every day our heroes resist in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Maryinka and other cities and communities in Donbass means a reduction in Russian aggression for weeks.”
Zelenky pointed to an “unprecedented destruction of Russian potential now taking place” and that anything in Donbass it loses “the enemy will not be able to recover”.
“This is precisely the Russian potential for aggression that the leadership of the terrorist state hoped to destroy all of our Ukraine”he declared.
In this sense, it is clear to the leader of Ukraine that “the Kremlin is trying to squeeze out all possible aggressive potential”which he attributes to haste. “They know the world is stronger, but it takes time to build its strength.”
Therefore he continued, “Speed is very important. Speed in everything. In making decisions. In executing decisions, in delivering [de meios militares], in training. Speed saves lives, speed brings safety back”defended.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia political and economic sanctions.
