NGO denounces three attempts to kidnap baby born in rubble after Syria earthquake

The “miracle baby” who was born under the rubble and lost her entire family after the earthquakes in Aleppo, Syria, has suffered three abduction attempts in the past 48 hours, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights denounced on Tuesday.

Several groups attempted to kidnap Aya — the Arabic name for “a sign from God” — for financial reasons, as her case has sparked international interest and organizations have already offered money to adopt her, the nongovernmental organization revealed in a statement. in the UK, and which has staff in the field.

The latest kidnapping attempt was carried out on Monday by gunmen, in which they raided the Cihan Hospital, where the baby is hospitalized, in the city of Afrín and assaulted medical staff, intending to take the baby by force.

The Observatory said the attackers belonged to the Turkish militia Sultan Murad Brigade, which is active in the area, adding that they intended to hand over Aya to people associated with the Syrian government “in exchange for very large sums of money “.

Aya has been closely watched since birth and people from all over the world have volunteered to help her, and others falsely claim to be related to the child, leading to police surveillance at the scene, a medical source revealed.

Aya’s mother died after giving birth after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, as did her father and four siblings.

Aya can leave the hospital on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to her great-uncle Saleh al-Badran, who said the baby’s paternal aunt, who recently gave birth and survived the earthquake, plans to raise the child.
