The man who fatally struck a person on a sidewalk in New York on Monday was suffering from an apparent mental health crisis after seeing an “invisible object,” police said.
Weng Sor, 62, was charged with murder and attempted murder after attacking pedestrians in Brooklyn while police were chasing him.
The chaos lasted about 48 minutes and ended with police authorities backing the vehicle against a building. One person died and eight were injured.
Sor, with a history of violence and mental illness, told police an “invisible object” triggered the attack, Chief Detective James Essig said Tuesday.
Sor’s family said the man had stopped taking his medication, Essig added.
“He said that while driving the truck, he sees an invisible object towards the vehicle. At that moment he says: ‘I’m fed up’ and continues in his destructive rage, ”the person in charge noted.
Weng Sor lived in Las Vegas with his mother and traveled to New York last week after spending time in Florida and being detained twice in the days leading up to the attack, police added.
