Defense Minister Helena Carreiras considers that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s decision to award Volodymyr Zelensky the Grand Collar of the Order of Liberty is a “more than deserved” distinction.
Questioned in Brussels on the sidelines of the meeting at the Atlantic Alliance headquarters, Helena Carreiras says that the distinction attributed by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa could be extended to the “people and the armed forces” of Ukraine.

“I had no knowledge, but it seems very good to me. I think it is a more than deserved distinction for someone who is fighting with the determination, persistence and courage of President Zelensky,” said the minister, considering that this “is also a distinction, I think , for its people and for the Ukrainian armed forces themselves”.
The Presidency of the Republic announced this Wednesday afternoon that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will award the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Order of Freedom.
“The President of the Republic had the intention of announcing on the 24th of this month, the date on which one year has passed since Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the award of President Zelensky. Taking into account the parliamentary initiative on this matter, he announces that he has decided to award the President of Ukraine the Grand Collar of the Order of Freedom ”, reads the note of the Presidency of the Republic.
