Russia on Friday considered the United States’ request for American citizens to leave Russian territory immediately because of the fallout from the invasion of Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakarova denied Washington’s allegations of “possible harassment, assault and arbitrary detention” of US citizens in Russia.
“It is a feature of the discriminatory treatment that Russians face” in the United States, added the spokeswoman quoted by the TASS agency.
Maria Zakarova also said Washington wants to “cancel anything Russian” and criticized the alleged persecution of Russian citizens who own property “in other countries”, without specifying.
The US embassy in Moscow on Monday issued a new travel warning to US citizens advising them not to travel to Russia, and also asking US citizens who are on Russian soil to leave the country immediately.
The same note states that “it has limited capacity to assist U.S. citizens in Russia.”
“Maintain the utmost precautions due to the risk of arrests” refers to the same note released at the beginning of the week.
“On October 20, 2022, the Russian government declared martial law in the border regions with Ukraine, allowing for the rapid application of restrictive measures,” the note adds.
