Christian Atsu found dead in rubble from earthquake

The body of former FC Porto player Christian Atsu was found in the rubble of the luxury apartment where he lived after the earthquake in Turkey. The news came from his manager.

Atsu was hit on February 6 by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria to its foundations. More than 43,000 people were killed in both countries.

There were initial reports that the player was rescued alive a day after the disaster, but these turned out to be false.

His manager in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet, told the DHA news agency on Saturday that the body of Christian Atsu was found under rubble in Turkey’s Hatay province, in the south of the country.

“We have reached his lifeless body. His belongings are still being removed. His mobile phone has also been found,” Uzunmehmet told DHA.

Christian Atsu spent four seasons with Chelsea before moving permanently to Newcastle in 2017. In September, he signed for Turkish Super League side Hatayspor.

Search teams found Atsu’s body in the luxury apartment building where he lived, the Ronesans Residence, which collapsed in the Antakya town of Hatay.

Turkish police arrested the contractor at Istanbul airport last week when he appeared to be trying to flee to Montenegro, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
