A new agreement between London and Brussels on the Northern Ireland Protocol may be in the offing and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, went to Belfast yesterday to discuss the matter with leaders of the region’s main political parties. Sinn Féin nationalists and DUP trade unionists, who have been unable to form a power-sharing government since May 2022 due to the controversial protocol, agree that progress has been made. But according to the latter, “some work” is still needed to reach an agreement.
Sunak himself admitted that, back in London. “We still don’t have an agreement,” he said, emphasizing that there is still “work to be done”. Speaking of the trip to Belfast, he spoke of “positive talks” about “ongoing discussions” to resolve the situation. But it may also face resistance from the conservatives themselves.
