Von der Leyen calls for redoubled efforts for military support to Kiev

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the Security Conference in Munich, Germany, this Saturday called for a “redouble of efforts” for military aid to Ukraine to help Kiev fend off the Russian invasion.

“We must continue with the very massive support needed to defeat the imperialist plans [Vladmir] Putin,” Ursula von der Leyen in Munich, quoted by the agency France-Presse (AFP), stated that “it is time to accelerate, because Ukraine needs material to survive”.

Almost a year after the start of the war (the invasion began on February 24, 2022), there is no sign of reconciliation on the battlefront and NATO fears another large-scale Moscow offensive in the near future.

The president of the European Commission called for an acceleration of the production of conventional weapons, such as ammunition, which Kiev “desperately needs”.

“It is not possible that we have to wait months, years to replenish ourselves” to deliver the material to Ukraine, he stressed.

According to diplomatic sources in Brussels, member states of the European Union are currently investigating how they can jointly buy ammunition for Ukraine.

Estonia, the Baltic country at the forefront of aid to Ukraine, has presented its partners with a quantified proposal: an allocation of €4 billion from member states to the European Peace Facility, the fund used for the purchase and supply of weapons to Ukraine, according to the same sources.

This credit would allow the purchase of one million 155 mm projectiles.

The subject is on the agenda of Monday’s meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.
