UN says 8.8 million Syrians need earthquake aid

The United Nations Organization (UN) advanced this Sunday that there are at least 8.8 million people affected, only in Syria, by the earthquakes that occurred two weeks ago in Turkey and on Syrian territory, and noted that the majority will need humanitarian aid. .

“At least 8.8 million people in Syria were affected by the earthquake and most will need some form of humanitarian aid. The UN is absolutely committed to helping all Syrians,” said UN Special Representative for Syria, Najat Rochi, in a post on his Twitter account. .

Activists and rescue teams denounced the lack of UN aid in northwestern Syria controlled by forces opposed to President Bashar Al-Assad.

The coordinator of the UN Emergency Relief, Martin Griffiths, has already visited the area and acknowledged that the organization has failed with the victims in this part of the country.

There are also bureaucratic obstacles and logistical problems, such as the lack of road infrastructure in good condition after years of war in the country. Therefore, the smaller trucks could have delivered the aid much sooner than the large trucks normally used.

So far, 170 trucks from Turkey have reached the rebel-held areas of northwestern Syria. In this region, more than 9,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged by the earthquake and at least 11,000 people lost their homes, so the most needed material at this time are tents.

The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, respectively, occurred on February 6 and the official death toll is around 46,000 in both countries, a figure that is expected to continue to rise. .
