More than 2,000 people remain stranded in New Zealand a week after Cyclone Gabrielle hit the North Island, killing 11, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said on Monday.
New Zealand authorities are reaching out to people as emergency services work to fully restore power to around 15,000 homes and repair internet and telephone connections.
Hipkins told a news conference in Wellington that police were able to contact 4,260 of the 6,517 people who had been isolated.
The Government of New Zealand also announced a fund of 250 million New Zealand dollars (146 million euros) for the repair of road infrastructure and another 50 million New Zealand dollars (29 million euros) to help affected companies and workers.
Cyclone Gabrielle hit the North Island on February 12, and the New Zealand government declared a state of emergency in many affected regions, including Auckland, the country’s most populous city.
