At least 19 people have died in the avalanches that have hit Tajikistan in recent days. Since Wednesday there have been 200 avalanches and several landslides and large rockfalls in this small, mountainous Central Asian country.
“From February 15 to 19, 200 avalanches, seven landslides and six rockfalls were recorded,” local emergency services reported in a statement cited by the AFP agency. “19 of our citizens died in the avalanches.”
The most affected area is Upper Badashkhan, near the Afghan border. There are houses and roads completely buried, in a region where 30,000 people live.
Emergency authorities urged people not to leave their homes. The instability of the soils is due to heavy snowfall and heavy rain in the region.
