Zelensky appoints new Ukrainian ambassador to Portugal

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, this Tuesday signed the decree designating Maryna Yuriivna Mykhaylenko as “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary” of Ukraine to the Portuguese Republic.

The decree was published on the website of the Ukrainian presidency.

On June 24, 2022, Zelensky decided to remove the acting ambassador, Inna Ohnivets, who said she was informed of the decision two days earlier and considered it a “planned rotation”.

On that occasion, and according to the Kyiv Independent newspaper, the ambassadors to Georgia, Ihor Dolhov, and to Slovakia, Yurii Mushka, were also fired.

Ohnivets, who hails from the town of Zhovti Vody, in the Dnipropetrovsk region (in the south of the country), has been ambassador to Portugal since October 2015.

A lawyer by training, he taught English before becoming a diplomat. In 2003, she was appointed Consul General of Ukraine in the city of Presov, Slovakia, and from 2006 to 2010 she was the ambassador to the country.

In late September last year, the former ambassador admitted in statements to Lusa that she would step down from her duties “in the first days of October”, but remained in office for about another five months.

On that occasion, Inna Ohnivets, in statements to journalists in Braga, on the sidelines of a solidarity initiative with the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, defined her departure as a “normal” process and said she did not know who would succeed her in office. .
