The 27 approved the tenth package of sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine on Friday evening. In addition to the series of punitive measures worth several billion euros in damage to the Russian economy, personalities and companies from a third country, Iran, will be mentioned for the first time.
Brussels believes that Moscow will struggle to find alternatives to European supplies of raw materials to compensate for the losses caused by the war.
The decision was announced by the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, after three rounds of negotiations in the past three days.
It has been a year since Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Today the EU approved the 10th package of Russian sanctions.
The package includes:
– Stricter export restrictions in the field of dual-use and technology
(1/3)
– Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU (@sweden2023eu) February 24, 2023
Moscow loses access to imports of electronic and technological materials, as well as machines, previously shipped from the countries of the European Union. For example, repairing parts for trucks, cranes, antennas and jet engines. Civilian equipment that may have military use, such as drones or thermal cameras, will also be included in the list.
The sanctions also concern raw materials such as bitumen, asphalt and rubber, which the Russian Federation can no longer sell to the European Union.
Brussels puts four new banks on the sanctions list, which will from now on also be disconnected from the international Swift payment system. The four entities join the majority of the Russian financial system already approved by the European Union.
The list also includes Kremlin propaganda agents and individuals responsible for the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russian territory.
The punitive measures in response to the invasion of Ukraine hit targets outside Russian territory for the first time. In this tenth package of sanctions, the 27 agreed to release members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and a group of seven entities responsible for keeping open a supply channel for war materials to Russia, such as kamikaze drones, with which the Kremlin bombed the city, To hit. Together with the G7, ways to include the diamond trade in the sanctions should be considered.
The sanctions package now approved also aims to target individuals and entities that could help Russia evade European sanctions.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Friday that Brussels is sending a “very clear message” to those who “import or export European products to third countries”, who then forward them to Russian territory. They will also be “listed” for European sanctions.
“We include in our sanctions packages the possibility to list people or entities – even from third countries – who help to circumvent sanctions, export or import goods from the European Union to third countries who then forward them to Russia,” revealed the head of the municipal administration.
