A young Spanish woman arrested in November in Iran during protests against the death of Iranian Mahsa Amini was released this Saturday and is already on a return flight to Spain, a Spanish diplomatic source announced this Sunday.
Ana Baneira Suárez, 24, a member of a non-governmental organization that defends human rights, has been in prison since the beginning of November, when she was arrested for allegedly participating in the protests that took place after the death of the young Iranian-Kurdish man. Mahsa Amini.
According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid, quoted by the EFE agency, the young woman was released this Saturday by the Iranian authorities and has already spoken with the minister, José Manuel Albares, whom she has said is fine.
To the official, the activist also expressed her joy at returning home and her gratitude for the initiatives of the Government of Madrid to obtain her release.
Another Spaniard, Santiago Cogedor, 41, was also detained by the Iranian authorities for having photographed the tomb of Mahsa Amini.
Santiago Cogedor and Ana Baneira are two of the 40 foreigners that the Iranian authorities admitted, on November 22, to having been detained for their alleged participation in the protests related to the death of the young Iranian woman.
Mahsa Amini was arrested in September on a Tehran street by the “morality police” for incorrectly wearing the ‘hijab’ (Islamic headscarf), ending up dying days later in hospital, sparking several months of unprecedented protests. in the country and the world. .
In some three months of protests, heavily repressed by the Iranian authorities, more than 500 people died and at least 15,000 were detained, according to the non-governmental organization (NGO) Iran Human Rights.
