Brussels proposes to cut 65% of funds to Hungary for breach of the rule of law

The European Commission proposed this Sunday a suspension of 65%, worth 7,500 million euros, of EU funds to Hungary for violations of the rule of law.

The Commission has proposed to the Council [da UE] the suspension of 65% of the commitments of three operational programs under the cohesion policy, worth an estimated €7.5 billion, which represents around a third of the cohesion policy envelope for Hungary” announced the Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn, at a press conference.

Budapest is also prohibited from making legal commitments to public interest funds for programs implemented under direct and indirect management.

Adopted in 2021, the Cross Compliance Regulation establishes that, in the event of a breach of the rule of law in a given Member State and in situations affecting the financial interests of the EU, the Commission may propose to the Council of the EU the adoption of appropriate measures and proportionate, such as the suspension of funds, leaving the final decision to the Member States.

The College of Commissioners met this Sunday, in an extraordinary way, due to the external commitments assumed by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
