Twitter lays off another 200 employees

Twitter laid off at least 200 employees – 10% of its workforce – as job losses continue at US tech companies, The New York Times reports.

The new layoffs include product managers, big data specialists and engineers working on machine learning and platform reliability.

Twitter did not confirm these numbers when contacted by the AFP.

Esther Crawford, responsible for developing the social network, was one of 200 workers laid off. Crawford was one of the few remaining Twitter executives before the company was acquired by Elon Musk in October.

The head of the new Twitter Blue verification program, she has been a staunch supporter of Musk and the company, even going so far as to retouch a photo of her sleeping in a sleeping bag at her workplace.

“The worst thing you can get when you see me do it Everything in on Twitter 2.0 is that my optimism or hard work was a mistake,” he wrote on the platform.

“Those who mock are necessarily on the sidelines and not in the arena. I am immensely proud of the team that has built through so much noise and chaos.”

Other tech giants – including Amazon, Alphabet and Meta – have announced thousands of layoffs over the past year.

The layoffs come after a massive hiring wave in the tech industry as companies struggled to meet skyrocketing demand for their products as people commuted online for work, shopping and entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic.
