Russian occupation authorities in Kherson, in southern Ukraine, say an armed group was eliminated in Saturday night’s fighting in the center of the city, which is the target of a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
“In the center of Kherson, there was a clash between units of the Russian army patrolling the streets of the city and an unidentified group,” the occupation government said on the Telegram social network today.
“After a short fight, the attackers were eliminated,” the source continued, adding that no Russian soldiers or civilians were injured.
On the Ukrainian side, the spokeswoman for the southern command of the army, Natalia Goumeniouk, denounced a “provocation”, explaining, in statements to a Ukrainian television channel, that the shooting and the explosions that took place on Saturday in Kherson “are a provocation of the occupant.
“We warned them that the provocations would take place between September 17 and 20. Their goal is to tarnish the image of the Ukrainian armed forces,” he added.
In Russia, the press published a video showing two armored vehicles surrounded by soldiers during the incident, on an avenue in the area of the Kherson railway station.
In this video, one of the tanks opens fire with the machine gun, while other shots are heard.
Today, a Russian occupation official, Kirill Stremoussov, assured that the situation was “calm” in Kherson.
Since late August, Ukrainian troops have been leading a major offensive to retake the region and the city of Kherson, the country’s only regional capital, which fell to Russian hands in early March.
