Bus accident en route to China quarantine site leaves 27 dead

Twenty-seven people were killed in southwestern China on Sunday when a bus taking them to an anti-Covid quarantine site crashed, local authorities said.

The vehicle, which was carrying 47 people, “overturned”, local police said, adding that the accident also caused 20 injuries.

The accident, the deadliest in China since the beginning of the year, took place in Qiannan prefecture, an isolated mountainous region of Guizhou province where several ethnic minorities live.

The provincial government confirmed, a few hours after the accident, that the bus was transporting people “to the place where they would be quarantined” due to the covid-19 pandemic, but did not specify whether the passengers were sick, they were cases. contact. or simply a resident in a building where cases of infection have been recorded.

Guizhou province has recorded more than 900 new cases in the past two days.

However, on social networks, people have mourned the dead, in messages accompanied by lamentations against the “zero covid” policy in force in China.

During Shanghai’s two-month city lockdown last spring, many residents of cities with COVID-19 cases were bussed in the middle of the night to rudimentary facilities in other provinces for quarantine.
