Twitter introduces new rules for violent speech that sound old

Twitter unveiled a new policy on Wednesday banning “violent expressions” on its platform the rules are very similar to those before Elon Musk took over the company.

One of the updates is a ban on “coded language” used to indirectly incite violence.

It also prohibits “threats to destroy civilian homes and shelters or infrastructure essential to daily, civic or business activities”.

The news comes as the San Francisco-based company prepares to comply with new European Union regulations, which take effect this fall.

These new rules require companies to monitor the posting on their platforms of material that promotes terrorism, sexual abuse, incitement to hatred or commercial counterfeiting.

Twitter’s new policy on violent speech states that “healthy conversation cannot take place when violent speech is used to spread a message. Accordingly, there is a zero-tolerance policy for violent speech, to ensure user safety and promote the normalization of violent speech.” prevent actions”.

But Twitter already had a version of this rule in its playbook in October 2021, a year before Musk bought the company for $44 billion. The old rule introduced a “zero tolerance policy against violent threats. Those who post violent threats will face immediate and permanent account suspension.”

But of course policy is only as good as its enforcement. After losing most of its workforce to collective layoffs and voluntary redundancies, it’s not clear Twitter can force its users to comply.
