Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, defended this Sunday that the international community must put pressure on Russia to reach the negotiating table to stop aggression in Ukraine and prevent a possible use of nuclear weapons.
“It is necessary to try to convince Russia to sit down at the table to negotiate a peaceful solution to the crisis in Ukraine”said Tajani to television station Mediaste.
The head of Italian diplomacy noted that the meaning of peace “marks not the defeat of Ukraine, but the withdrawal of Russian troops”.
“We absolutely want to avoid any risk, including a hypothetical risk, of using nuclear weapons, even if it is tactical and limited to some areas, because that would be a disaster,” he stressed, quoted by the Associated Press (AP).
Rome has supported Kiev since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 last year, including through military aid.
