António Guterres will meet Volodymyr Zelensky this Wednesday to discuss the grain deal between Ukraine and Russia.
According to a UN spokesman, the leader of the United Nations will travel to Kiev this Tuesday, where he will meet the Ukrainian president.
“The Secretary-General has just arrived in Poland on his way to Ukraine,” Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
The grain deal was extended for another 120 days in November and expired on March 18.
Last Thursday, Russia’s foreign ministry said the deal was not working and accused the West of failing to honor its Russia-related part of the agreements.
According to the ministry, about 262,000 tons of fertilizer that the Russian side planned to donate to the poorest countries has been blocked in ports in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the Netherlands. The single batch of 20,000 tons has been shipped to Malawi, but “has not yet reached the recipient”.
Russia announced on Sunday that it is ready to honor its part of the grain export deal signed last July if the other participants apply it on an equal footing.
In an interview with the Rossiya-1 television channel, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia is ready to implement its part of the deal if the other participants fulfill their commitments on an equal footing.
On July 22, 2022, an agreement was signed in Istanbul to solve the problem of food and fertilizer supply in world markets.
“If this agreement, which has obligations of the parties and not just one of them and the machinations of the other party, if this agreement is the same, we have always implemented our part of all agreements and we will execute it,” he said.
He continued: “If it’s more of a double deception, if it’s more of an attempt to focus on what you want and forget about everything else, and we’ve seen examples like that even under the food deal, then we’re sorry.” .”
One of the agreements regulated the export of grain from the Kiev-controlled ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny. An agreement between Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Nations provided for the establishment of a four-point coordination center to search ships carrying grain to prevent arms smuggling and provocation.
In addition, Russia and the United Nations have signed a memorandum stipulating that the UN will take measures to lift various restrictions on the export of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to the world market.
