Russia says discovery of hundreds of bodies at Izium ‘is a lie’

The Kremlin on Monday called reports of the discovery of hundreds of bodies and a mass grave in Izium, eastern Ukraine, a lie after Russian forces withdrew from the area last week.

“It is a lie. Of course we will defend the truth in this case,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said.

The Government of Ukraine declared that its military found more than 440 bodies in graves and in a mass grave after regaining control of the town of Izium, located in the Kharkiv region, controlled until last week by Russian troops.

Since the beginning of its military intervention in Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly denied any abuses.

“It’s the same scenario as Bucha,” Peskov said today, referring to another Ukrainian town near kyiv where Russian military forces have been accused of committing atrocities, which Moscow also denies.

The Kremlin spokesman also assured today that the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014, is “an integral part of the territory of Russia”, after the Ukrainian authorities reiterated that they wanted to end the Russian “occupation”.

“Any sighting on Russian territory will receive a proper response,” Peskov added.
