The president of the European Commission warned that Europe will never accept Russia threatening the continent’s security in a speech to Canada’s parliament to bolster support for Ukraine.
“We will never accept that a military force with imperial dreams sends tanks across an international border”guaranteed, on Wednesday, Ursula von der Leyen, in Ottawa.
“[A UE] will never accept this threat to European security and to the foundations of our international community”he added.
“We will never accept that [o Presidente russo, Vladimir] Putin denies the existence of Ukraine, as a state and as a nation”emphasized the President of the European Commission.
Von der Leyen called for “unwavering military and economic support” for Ukraine and demanded that Russia “pay for the crime of aggression”, after proposing in November to create a special court to try war crimes committed in Ukraine.
The German leader compared the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Russian president’s territorial ambitions to Nazi Germany and World War II.
“It was German Nazism and Fascism that brought death and destruction to Europe and the world. But the Allies gave us back our freedom. United democracies liberated us from dictatorship”said the President of the European Commission.
On the eve of International Women’s Day, the leader also greeted Ukrainian women, who were not allowed to fight for the war, but “it didn’t matter and went to the army anyway”.
“It’s not just a war in Ukraine. It’s also a war on human rights and it’s a war on women’s rights.”said von der Leyen, to the applause of Canadian lawmakers, citing UN allegations that “Russia is using rape and sexual violence as part of its military strategy in Ukraine.”
Ukrainian women are “fighting back,” he declared.
Hours earlier, Canada and the EU had reached an agreement to send seven Canadian-made generators to Ukraine to bolster the country’s electrical infrastructure.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ursula von der Leyen.
Trudeau announced that Canada will allocate $3 million (about $2.8 million) to clear mines in Ukraine.
In addition, Ottawa will extend its training missions for the Ukrainian armed forces at least until the fall.
The president of the European Commission added that the EU’s goal is to train 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of the year.
After the visit to Canada, the person responsible has to go to the United States, where she will be received by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, on Friday.
