The Greek Transport Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, announced Wednesday measures to improve the safety of the railway system, after the collision of two passenger trains last week, which caused almost 60 deaths.
Gerapetritis -who was recently appointed, after the resignation of the previous minister, after the disaster- reported that the Government intends to increase the signaling of the railway network, among other measures.
The new minister also said that the operation of passenger trains will resume after the implementation of these security measures, which also include the presence of two chiefs at each station.
In response to the protest demonstrations in recent days, Gerapetritis expressed solidarity with all those who expressed their dissatisfaction with the safety of the rail system.
“I would like to express my anger and pain about what happened in Tempe. This is an unprecedented national tragedy, which scares everyone due to its magnitude”, said the minister.
The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has announced that he has contacted companies in the railway sector to ensure the application of the new security measures.
On the night of February 28, two passenger trains collided near Tempe, a small town located in a valley where there is a railway tunnel, some 300 kilometers north of Athens, in an accident that caused the derailment of several carriages and in which 57 people died.
