The North Korean leader oversaw a live-fire exercise simulating an attack on a South Korean airfield and asked troops to be prepared for “frantic war-ready movements,” it was reported Friday.
The exercise and Kim Jong-un’s comments, reported by North Korean media, come after a series of joint US-South Korean military exercises and a day after the South Korean military detected that North Korea fired at least one short-range ballistic missile into the sea. from a location near the western coastal city of Nampo.
The United States recently sent B-1B and B-52 long-range bombers to several joint air exercises with South Korean fighter jets, and the two countries are preparing this month for the biggest exercise in recent years in response to the threat of Pyongyang’s growing nuclear arsenal.
North Korea sees these military exercises as rehearsals for an invasion.
Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency, KCNA, said Kim urged troops to be prepared to “overwhelmingly respond to and contain” enemy military action.
The South Korean Ministry of Unification urged North Korea to stop “nuclear programs and (…) and military provocations.”
