Shock chain leaves at least 36 injured in Hungary

At least 36 people were injured this Saturday, 13 of them seriously, as a result of a chain accident on a highway about 25 kilometers from Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Of the approximately 40 vehicles involved in the collision on the M1 highway, west of Budapest, 19 caught fire, police authorities cited the Associated Press agency.

In a statement, the National Directorate of Civil Protection said that the fires have already been extinguished and that four rescue helicopters, as well as firefighters from several nearby towns, arrived at the scene to treat the injured.

Authorities have stopped traffic in both directions on the M1, while removal and clean-up operations will continue for the next few hours.

The spokesman for the national rescue service, Pal Gyorfi, declined to say a possible cause of the accident, but the company that manages the roads in Hungary admitted that a localized dust storm may have caused a sudden reduction in visibility on the road.
