French Senate approves controversial increase in retirement age

This Saturday’s approval in the Senate (the upper house of the French parliament) was taken as “an important step” by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, according to the France-Presse news agency (AFP).

About a million people demonstrated in France today to challenge the pension reform proposed by the government. There were an estimated 300,000 protesters in Paris alone, with at least 26 people arrested.

This was the seventh consecutive weekly mobilization called by the main French trade unions.

The main point of the government’s proposed reform of the pension system is the increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64, justified in response to the financial degradation of pension funds and the aging of the population.

The text follows the legislative process next week, with a vote scheduled for Thursday in the National Assembly (lower house).
