South Korea today discovered the launch of a test missile from a North Korean submarine ahead of joint exercises between South Korean and US forces in the region.
South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said in a statement they had detected a North Korean missile launch from a submarine in the waters near the port city of Sinpo in eastern North Korea.
According to Seoul, military officials in South Korea and the United States are reviewing the details of the launch.
This is North Korea’s last weapons test this year. However, the North Korean agency KCNA indicates that two cruise missiles were launched from a submarine in the east of North Korea.
The launch came on the eve of large-scale joint military exercises between the US and South Korean armies that North Korea sees as a rehearsal for the invasion.
These exercises, which are called freedom shieldlasts 11 days and are the longest military maneuvers ever conducted by countries.
With these maneuvers, the two countries are trying to send a signal to North Korea, which is threatening to develop its nuclear program.
