Oscar for Best International Film for the German “All the New West”

The German film “Nothing New in the West” won the Oscar for Best International Film tonight, at the 95th Academy Awards of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood.

Best Documentary Short Film went to “The Elephant Whisperers”, by Kartiki Gonsalves.

Edward Berger’s “Nothing New A West” has already won this year’s BAFTA Awards from the British Academy of Film, including Best Foreign Language Film.

The work takes as reference the homonymous novel by Erich Maria Remarque, focused on the Great War of 1914-1918.

“Argentina, 1985”, by Santiago Mitre, focused on the so-called “Processo das Juntas”, the first trial in the country to convict the leaders of the military dictatorship (1976-1983) for their crimes (awarded at the Golden Globes ), Lukas Dhont’s “Close”, Jerzy Skolimowski’s “Eo” and Colm Bairéad’s “The Quiet Girl/An Cailín Ciúin” were the other nominees.

Also nominated for Best Documentary Short “Haulout” by Maxim Arbugaev and Evgenia Arbugaeva, “How Do You Measure a Year?” by Jay Rosenblatt, “The Martha Mitchell Effect” by Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy, “Stranger at the Gate” by Joshua Seftel.

The Oscars celebrate their 95th edition tonight at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, in a ceremony in which “Ice Merchants”, by Portuguese director João Gonzalez, is also nominated for Best Animated Short Film.

“Ice Merchants” is the first Portuguese film nominated for an Oscar in Hollywood.

This year, “All at the same time everywhere”, an independent production by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, leads the race, with 11 nominations, bringing together those for Best Picture and Direction, in addition to the acting categories.

Also nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture are “The Spirits of Inisherin” (Martin McDonagh), “The Fablemans” (Steven Spielberg), “Tár” (Todd Field), “All New West” (Edward Berger), “Top Gun : Maverick” (Joseph Kosinski), “Elvis” (Baz Luhrmann), “Avatar: The Waterway” (James Cameron), “The Woman’s Voice” (Sarah Polley) and “Triangle of Sadness” (Ruben Ostlund ).
