As of this Wednesday, China will relaunch the issuance of practically all its visas for foreigners, highly restricted since the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chinese embassy in Washington announced on Monday, a new step towards the return to normality desired by Beijing.
In addition, visas issued by Beijing before March 28, 2020 and that have not yet expired will regain their validity and offer their holders the option to enter China again, the embassy said in a press release.
End of sanitary measures
China will also restore the possibilities for certain visa-free entries, including those to the resort island of Hainan or those allowed to cruise ship passengers calling in Shanghai.
After three years of some of the world’s most draconian restrictions, which have severely affected its economy and ended up sparking nationwide protests, China abruptly lifted most of its measures to combat the pandemic last December.
Then, in January, the Chinese authorities lifted the mandatory quarantine for travelers from abroad, one of the most emblematic measures of the government’s “covid zero” strategy.
