Putin accuses the European Union of blocking the donation of 300,000 tons of fertilizers

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the European Union on Tuesday of blocking the donation of 300,000 tons of Russian fertilizer to countries that need it most, considering that the West is adopting more and more obstacles to Russian exports.

“The height of cynicism is to block our offer in European ports … to move 300,000 tons of Russian fertilizers,” he added.

“They don’t want our businessmen to make money,” he said, stressing that Russia wants to “give [os fertilizantes] to countries in need

Russia, a world power in the production of cereals, cannot sell its production or associated fertilizers due to Western sanctions that affect, in particular, the financial and logistics sectors.

In 2021, Russia was the largest exporter of nitrogenous fertilizers and the second largest exporter of potassium and phosphorus fertilizers, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

According to Putin, it is the countries of Africa, South Asia and Latin America that are “most affected by Western restrictions on the supply of Russian energy, food and fertilizers on world markets.”

The comments came at a time when Moscow has stepped up criticism of the two agreements signed in July in Istanbul to allow Ukraine’s grain exports despite the Russian offensive, but also, in theory, Moscow’s exports.

Vladimir Putin also promised today to maintain his “sovereign foreign policy” and accused the United States of wanting to impose its “hegemony” in the United Nations General Assembly, marked this year by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Although he has sent Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to New York, Putin does not plan to make any speeches at this year’s General Assembly, as Russia’s intervention in Ukraine has been widely condemned around the world.

Even so, the Russian president spoke today, after receiving the credentials of the ambassadors abroad, stating that “the development of multipolarity faces resistance from those who strive to maintain a hegemonic role in world affairs and control everything: Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa”.

“We have to admit: those in a position of hegemony are doing very well, but this cannot last forever. It is impossible,” he said.

“We in Russia are not going to discard our sovereign path. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, we want to promote a unifying international agenda (…) and contribute to the regulation of serious regional crises”, he said. additional.
