Poland dismantles alleged Russian espionage network

Poland has dismantled an alleged Russian spy network developing operations in support of Moscow’s offensive against Ukraine, the defense minister of the Warsaw government confirmed this Thursday.

‘The whole network has been dismantled’Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Baszczak told Polish public radio PR1.

“This is a group of spies, a group that collected information for those who attacked Ukraine”he said, adding only that “the threat was real”.

The interior minister is expected to comment on the matter at a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. (10 a.m. in Lisbon).

On Wednesday, citing unidentified sources, the private Polish radio station RMF FM indicated that the Directorate of Internal Security (ABW) had questioned six foreign citizens who allegedly worked for the Russian secret services and who were “preparing to carry out acts of sabotage in Poland to organise”. .

The suspects were detained after examining footage captured by cameras placed on railway tracks capturing and transmitting traffic data, RMF reported on Wednesday.

According to the same radio station, “dozens of devices” were installed along the railways in the southeast of the country, especially near Jasionka airport, in the Rzeszow region, one of the main transport points of Western weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

Also according to the RMF, after the operation that led to the arrest of the six persons, the police strengthened their presence in the strategic infrastructure of the country.
