German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday called it “particularly important” to quickly supply Ukraine with the ammunition needed to repel Russia’s invasion of its territory.
“Together with our European partners, we decide together on new measures to ensure a better and continuous supply” of ammunition at next week’s European summit, Scholz declared during a speech to the deputies of the German parliament.
Germany “is ready to open its supply projects to other member states” of the European Union (EU), he added.
The first European economy will “continue its political, financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine for as long as necessary,” he reaffirmed.
Kiev has been asking for more ammunition to defend against Russian troops for weeks as the war centers on the east of the country, namely in Bakhmut, the scene of heavy fighting.
In particular, the Ukrainian army continues to warn about the lack of 155mm ammunition for the weapons it uses to repel the invader.
European Commissioner for Industry, Thierry Breton, stated that Europe would push for an increase in ammunition production for Ukraine, the manufacture of which is carried out by “fifteen manufacturers from eleven countries of the Union”.
“We must act very quickly, the war in Ukraine, desired by Vladimir Putin, tragic, is now translating into trench warfare (…)”Breton told RMC radio on Monday.
