Police block march in central Mozambique and make several arrests

Police detained at least three people in the city of Beira, in central Mozambique, after clashes with participants in a march in honor of rapper Azagaia.

The ‘people’s rapper’ died of an illness in the last week and several tribute marches were scheduled for today in the country.

The police blocked the participants of the march in the city of Beira, halfway, despite the fact that on Friday they assured that they had authorization to carry out.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters today that, however, orders had been received for the march not to take place.

Before the blockade, tempers flared and there were confrontations with physical attacks, without shots, which resulted in the arrest of at least three participants, said a source from the organization.

The other groups that were going to join the march did not leave the meeting point, at the Munhava intersection, at the entrance to Beira, from where they would go down to Praça 03 de Fevereiro, in Ponta Gea, a prime area of the city .

The police arranged a police cordon to prevent movement.

Albano Carige, president of the Municipal Council of Beira, asked the participants in the march to disperse and postponed its realization for another time.

In Chimoio, the provincial capital of Manica, also in the center of the country, the three organizations that were preparing the march announced their cancellation today, without explaining the decision.

The march in Maputo was dispersed with tear gas, but groups of participants remain in the streets of the city center in defiance of the police, who respond with gas and charges against the participants.
