Macron survives two censure motions. Reform law passed in France

The French National Assembly this Monday rejected two censure motions against the government over its plan to overhaul the pension law, which plunged France into a political and social crisis.

After a tense parliamentary debate, a vote was taken on the first motion, tabled by several opposition parties, which was thought to gain more support and was ultimately rejected by a narrow margin – just nine votes – with 278 votes out of 287. necessary to overthrow the government of Elisabeth Borne.

French deputies then expressed their views on a second censure motion to the executive tabled by the far-right National Union, which had no chance of approval: it received only 94 of the 287 votes needed.

This revision of the pension law, envisaged by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, which raises the retirement age in the country from 62 to 64 years, is thus considered to have been finally approved by the Parliament, before its promulgation by the Head of the state, which will be able to pronounce itself in the coming days.

The two censure motions against the government followed its appeal, last Thursday, against Article 49.3 of the Constitution, which provides for the adoption of a diploma without a vote of the chamber if no motion of censure against the executive that submits it is passed. approved.

The social protest, which has been raging in the country for several months, is far from abating now that the law has been finally passed and calls for new protests have already begun.
