Cravinho says that “it would be very useful” if Xi Jinping explained the “peace plan” to Putin

“The expectation is that China corresponds to what their words have been, to what their positions have publicly assumed, that is, in relation to not supplying Russia with weapons, and also in relation to what they called a peace plan, that in reality it is not a plan, it is a set of positions of China”, said João Gomes Cravinho, at the end of a Foreign Affairs Council, when asked about the three-day official visit that Chinese President Xi has been carrying out. Jinping. from today to Moscow.

And he continued: “Our expectation is that, during his visit to Moscow, President Xi Jinping explains the positions that China takes in relation to the defense of the territorial integrity of all countries, in relation to the defense of the Charter of Nations United. United Nations, in relation to the importance of nuclear safety, in relation to the issue of humanitarian support to populations in need”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping today began their informal meeting in the Kremlin with the Chinese peace initiative for Ukraine on the table.

In February, China unveiled a generic 12-point “peace plan” to end the conflict in Ukraine, then called on Moscow and kyiv for talks.

The two leaders, sitting next to each other in the Kremlin (seat of the Russian Presidency), according to images broadcast by Russian public television, held a first informal meeting, before continuing talks over dinner.

Xi Jinping arrived in the Russian capital today for a three-day official visit.

Welcoming the Chinese leader, Putin said he is available to discuss the peace plan presented by Beijing to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

“We are always open to a negotiation process. We will certainly discuss all these issues, including China’s initiatives, which we treat with respect,” Putin said during the informal meeting with Xi.

The Russian president also assured his Chinese counterpart that the two countries have much in common.

“We have many common tasks and goals,” Putin said, welcoming the fact that Beijing is paying “great attention to the development of Russia-China relations.”

China maintains an ambiguous position regarding the war in Ukraine. On the one hand, he defends the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but on the other hand, he says that he also takes into account the security concerns announced by Russia.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
