Saudi Arabia has released a US citizen who was detained for more than a year over publications on the social network Twitter that made him crown prince of the kingdom, his son announced today.
Neither Saudi Arabia nor the United States have so far confirmed the release of 72-year-old Saad Almadi, who holds both US-Saudi nationality.
Almadi was home Monday night with relatives living in Riyadh, his son, Ibrahim Almadi, said.
The Saudi authorities had already dropped all charges against Ibrahim Almadi.
The American’s detention was one of several alleged human rights abuses that have strained relations between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US President Joe Biden.
Another was the 2018 murder of Jamal Khashoggi, an employee of the American newspaper Financial Times, in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
