Portuguese MEP Pedro Marques is part of a delegation from the European Parliament’s Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group that will visit Kiev next week to express “unequivocal support” for the people and authorities of Ukraine.
The delegation of the European Socialist caucus, which will be in Kiev on Tuesday, March 28, will be led by the president of the group, the Spanish Iratxe García Pérez.
In addition to Pedro Marques, Vice-President of S&D, the delegation includes three other MEPs: Croatian Tonino Picula and Estonian Sven Mikser, coordinators of the group in the parliamentary committees on Foreign Affairs and Security and Defense respectively, as well as Poland’s Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz , S&D shadow rapporteur for Ukraine and Russia.
The visit is scheduled for a series of high-level meetings, according to parliamentary sources, but more details will be released later due to security concerns.
In anticipation of the trip, Pedro Marques commented today that this visit is “extremely important, not only because of the symbolism it carries”, but also because it makes it possible in the Ukrainian capital personally to “show the unequivocal support of European socialists for the Ukrainian people and the authorities”.
And it will allow us to observe ‘in loco’ how Kyiv is doing, how Ukrainians’ morale is doing, while at the same time verifying current needs, so that later we can put pressure on the European institutions to provide the necessary support,” added the MEP.
The European Union’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian military aggression, launched in February 2022, will once again dominate the next summit of the 27 Heads of State and Government, which will take place in Brussels from Thursday to Friday.
