At least 11 people were killed in the earthquake that struck Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday, authorities in both countries said.
The quake had a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale, the United States Institute of Geophysics (USGS) said.
The epicenter of the earthquake, registered at 10:17 p.m. (4:47 p.m. in Lisbon), was located 40 kilometers southeast of Jurm, in northeast Afghanistan, the USGS reported.
More than 100 people were taken to hospitals in the Swat Valley region of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in shock, Pakistani emergency services spokesman Bilal Faizi told the Associated Press news agency.
Faizi added that most were later released from the hospital.
Faizi and other officials said nine people were killed when roofs collapsed in various parts of northwestern Pakistan.
Dozens of people were injured in the quake, also felt near the border with Tajikistan. The earthquake triggered landslides in some of the mountainous areas.
In Afghanistan, Taliban-appointed Ministry of Public Health spokesman Sharafat Zaman Amar said at least two people were killed and about 20 wounded.
