The partial mobilization of the Russian reservists demonstrates the will of President Vladimir Putin to continue the “escalation” of the war against Ukraine and is “a new sign of his disorganization,” the spokesman for the head of European diplomacy said on Wednesday. Joseph Borrell.
“The announcement of the partial mobilization of the reservists and the confirmation of the referendums (in the occupied regions of Ukraine) are a clear signal to the international community during the week of the United Nations General Assembly of their willingness to continue their war. destructive that has negative consequences throughout the world,” spokesman Peter Stano said.
“This action will have consequences on our side. EU member states have already held a coordination meeting on the sidelines of the general assembly in New York,” he said.
Peter Stano, however, declined to elaborate, saying details of the discussions were “confidential”.
The EU is “ready to continue” support for Ukraine
The EU has already adopted six sets of economic sanctions against Russia, but tensions have arisen between member states and Hungary has voiced opposition to the new European measures. Unanimity is required for EU sanctions.
“The occupied territories are part of Ukraine, which has every right to restore its authority there, and the EU is ready to continue its support in the military field,” Peter Stano added.
EU states must decide on the allocation of new funds for the continuation of their military assistance to Ukraine.
They have already released 2,500 million euros from the European Peace Fund, a fund managed intergovernmentally outside the common budget, and the new tranche under discussion should be 500 million, according to information obtained by AFP. Peter Stano has not confirmed this amount.
EU leaders will meet for an informal summit on October 6-7 in Prague. A meeting of Foreign Ministers will follow on October 17 and a meeting of Defense Ministers of NATO countries is scheduled for October 13-14 in Brussels.
