Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Thursday accused former US President Donald Trump of raising “false expectations” about his alleged detention as part of an investigation.
In recent days, Trump announced that his arrest was imminent as part of a trial alleging he paid a bribe to former pornographic actress Stormy Daniels in 2016 to cover up an extramarital relationship. On the same occasion, Trump called on his supporters to demonstrate against the court’s ruling.
Bragg this Thursday accused Trump of raising “false expectations” among his supporters and also taking the opportunity to attack a group of Republican congressmen who requested information from the Attorney General’s Office about that alleged arrest, in a letter asking the prosecutor for clarification, accusing him of “unprecedented abuse of fiscal authority” against a former president and current presidential candidate.
“In light of the dire consequences of his actions, we expect him to testify on what clearly appears to be a politically motivated tax decision.”the congressmen said in that letter, accusing Bragg of lacking impartiality.
To the Manhattan District Attorney, this letter “it was sent only after Trump raised the false expectation that he would be arrested the next day”.
