Russia attacks Zelensky hometown with ‘kamikaze drones’

The Russian army attacked Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of the Ukrainian president, early Friday with five “kamikaze drones”, which hit the targets without causing casualties, the head of the city’s military administration said.

On the Telegram messaging platform, Oleksandr Vilkul wrote that “the enemy has launched a massive attack on Kryvyi Rih with drones [aparelhos aéreos não tripulados] kamikaze”, made in Iran.

The ‘kamikaze’, or suicide drones, are intended for a single use: they carry explosives and are destroyed during the attack.

“Thanks to the air defense system, one of the enemy ‘drones’ was shot down”, he said.

The leader of the military administration of Kryviy Rih, an industrial city about 420 kilometers southeast of Kiev, said that “all major infrastructure, public transport, social and health institutions in the city are functioning stably despite the attack”.

Russia has been using Iranian Shahed-136 drones and sometimes missiles since October to target power infrastructure across Ukraine, which suffered massive blackouts over the winter.

Ukrainian authorities also reported a Russian missile attack on the southern region of Odessa.
