The President of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin this Saturday called for a legal ban on Russian territory of the activities of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“It is necessary to make changes to the legislation prohibiting any activity of the ICC on the territory of our country and also to study the responsibility for cooperation and support of the ICC,” he wrote on his Telegram account.
Volodin, who classified the arrest warrant as an “aggression” against Russia immediately after the warrant was issued, also called for the signing of bilateral agreements with friendly countries, including the “mutual renunciation of cooperation with the court of The Hague”.
In addition, he suggested that “the Supreme Commander”, that is, Putin, “should have the right to take action in defense of Russian citizens in case international structures take decisions that violate the norms of the Russian Constitution”.
Volodin addressed the House of Representatives bill during a meeting with Putin at the Kremlin on Friday.
At the same time, he recalled this Saturday that since the controversial 2020 referendum, the Russian Constitution contains a point that gives “precedence” to national law over international law.
“The decisions of the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Human Rights and other puppet institutions that Washington uses for its own interests are not carried out on Russian territory,” he said.
He recalled that in the past, the US had passed a law protecting its military so that none of them could be subject to an arrest warrant from the ICC, even launching a military intervention in the event that a US citizen is in charge. court.
Russia’s deputy head of the Security Council and former president Dmitry Medvedev warned on Thursday that any arrest of Putin would amount to a declaration of war on Russia.
Ukraine this week signed an agreement to open an ICC representative office, which President Volodymir Zelensky said will “enable international justice to be even more active in investigating the crimes of the Russian military”.
The court finds Putin “allegedly responsible” for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children – a war crime for the ICC – which has been repeatedly denounced by Kiev authorities.
