A member of the Sud-Rail union, who was injured on Thursday during a demonstration in Paris against pension reform, lost an eye after a grenade exploded by security forces, the union organization said on Saturday. The new legislation implies an increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64 years in 2030.
“Sébastien, a trade unionist for Sud-Rail, a railway worker in a materials workshop for more than 25 years and the father of three children, has lost an eye,” says a statement also signed by the Solidaires union, explaining that “by the explosion of a grenade “which the police use to disperse the crowd.
“This type of grenade is classified as war material by the internal security code,” say the two unions, citing the case of a protester whose thumb was bitten off by another grenade in the city of Rouen the same day and “strongly condemn this violence disproportionate and illegal” .
The Sud-Rail union told AFP that “complaints will be lodged”, without giving further details.
