Russia signs agreement with Belarus to put nuclear weapons in the country

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Moscow intends to install “tactical” nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, an allied country located at the gates of the European Union.

Quoted by the Russian news agency TASS, Putin said that this agreement will respect the non-proliferation treaty and that ten planes capable of transporting these nuclear weapons have already been sent to Belarus.

“There is nothing new here: the United States has been doing this for decades. It has had its tactical nuclear weapons positioned for a long time on the territory of its allies. We have decided to do the same,” Putin said in an interview. broadcast on Russian television, quoted by AFP, adding that he had the backing of the Belarusian government.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is an international treaty signed in 1968 by countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and, at the time, the Soviet Union, according to which these nations agreed to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of the countries that do not yet have them.
