President Joe Biden said Wednesday that the United States stands “with” protesters in Iran, who are shouting their anger at the country after the death of a young woman in police custody.
“We stand with the brave citizens and brave women of Iran, who are demonstrating at this very moment to defend their most basic rights,” the American leader said on the United Nations platform.
Mahsa Amini, from the Iranian region of Kurdistan (northwest), was arrested on September 13 in Tehran for “wearing inappropriate clothing” by the morality police, a unit in charge of enforcing the obligation to cover one’s hair and body to the knees.
He died three days later after falling into a coma. Since then, successive demonstrations across Iran have left at least five people dead.
