‘The risks are huge’: IAEA calls again for protection against Zaporizhia NPP

The agency’s director general calls demilitarization “an achievable goal.”

Zaporizhia always in the center of all concerns. While Ukraine and Russia still accuse each other of bombing the area surrounding Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the director general of the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, takes a new stand. “As long as there are bombings in a nuclear installation, the risks are enormous”, assures Rafael Grossi to BFMTV.

“We have to protect it, we know how to do it, we are going to propose to the Ukrainian authorities technical parameters to do it. Demilitarizing is an achievable goal but for the moment the agenda is to protect”, adds the Argentine.

In early September, the IAEA sent a team to Ukraine to check the general condition of the plant. This same Rafael Grossi then considered that the “physical integrity” of the infrastructure had been “violated”. “We do not have elements to assess that”, but “it is something that cannot continue to happen”, he has insisted.
